BLACKSBURG, Va. --The Clemson men's track team repeated as the ACC Indoor Champions on Monday, February 23 in Blacksburg, VA on the Virginia Tech campus. The Tigers won the event with 144 points ahead of North Carolina with 134.5 points and NC State with 130. Clemson chalked up a total of nine NCAA qualifiers during the meet.
"This was definitely a team effort," commented Clemson Head Coach Bob Pollock. "It took everyone on our team to win this championship. Our coaching staff did a tremendous job preparing our athletes for this meet. This definitely set the tone for our younger people realizing what it takes to win a championship, and that is everybody." The Tigers have won 13 ACC titles under Pollock's direction, including seven indoor titles.
Three Tigers walked away as ACC Champions. Freshman Tony Lloyd of Greenville, SC claimed the ACC title in the triple jump with a leap of 50'9 1/2". Joe Gibson crossed the finish line in a time of 8:16.30 to be crowned the ACC champion in the 3000m run. Shawn Crawford, a native of Van Wyck, SC, was named the conference champion in the 60m dash with a time of 6.66.
Clemson dominated the 60m dash with a 1-2-3-4 finish to score 29 points. Crawford's time of 6.66 broke the ACC record and won the event. He was followed by Carlton Chambers (6.70), Kenny Franklin (6.70) and Charles Allen (6.75) as the Tigers swept the 60m dash competition.
The men also fought a tough battle in the 60m hurdles to impressively finish 2-3-4 which gave the Tigers 19 points in the event. Jeremichael Williams narrowly missed claiming top honors by thousandths of a second. He placed second in the event with a provisional time of 7.79. Sultan Tucker followed with a provisional time of 7.82 as Greg Hines finished with a 8.03.
Crawford took second place in the 200m dash with an automatic qualifying time of 20.87, scoring eight points. Franklin followed in fourth with a provisional time of 21.20. Allen placed fifth in a time of 21.52 as Chambers wrapped up the scoring in the event with a time of 21.59.
The Tigers had two vaulters to tie for second place with a mark of 15'5 3/4". Freshmen Ben Hess and Jorge Tienda collectively scored 14 points for Clemson in the event. Also wrapping up a second-place finish for the Tigers was Davidson Gill with a time of 1:50.82 in the 800m run. Freshman Esteban Diaz finished third in the mile run with a 4:07.34 performance to score for Clemson.
BLACKSBURG, Va. --The Lady Tigers placed second with 131 points at the ACC Indoor Championship meet on Monday afternoon in Blacksburg, VA on the Virginia Tech campus. Defending champion North Carolina took first place with 184 points, and Georgia Tech placed third with 61.
Simone Tomlinson claimed the ACC title in the 60m dash with an automatic qualifying time of 7.28. The 1600m relay team of Lashonda Cutchin, Samantha Watt, Nikkie Bouyer, and Shekera Weston captured the conference championship with a NCAA provisional time of 3:39.59.
Nikkie Bouyer chalked up an impressive performance for the Lady Tigers. She was the runner-up in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.20. The mark was a NCAA automatic qualifying time and a Clemson school record. Bouyer also had a strong performance in the 200m dash with another second-place finish and automatic qualifying mark as she crossed the finish line in 23.51. Teammate Shekera Weston closely followed in the 200m dash with an automatic qualifying time of 23.78.
The Lady Tigers posted a 2-3 finish in the 400m dash with both times provisionally qualifying for the national meet. Watt finished with a provisional time of 54.45 as teammate Weston turned in a time of 54.87.
