KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Clemson's men's 4 X110 hurdle relay team captured first place and Lady Tigers Shekera Weston and Nikki Sims finished in the top 10 in two different events each to highlight Clemson's participation in the Sea Ray Relays at the University of Tennessee on Saturday. The event is one of the most national outdoor track meets in the country each year.
The Lady Tigers had eight top 10 finishes. Weston, a freshman from Fort Campbell, KY, finished second in the 200 meters with a time of 23.52. That was the third fastest time in Clemson history. She also ranked 10th in the 100 meters with a time of 11.77. Sims, a four-time ACC Champion in the discus, finished fifth in that event with a throw of 46-11 1/2 and she was eighth in the discus with a throw of 153-07.
Other top 10 finishers for the Lady Tigers included two competitors in the 400 meters. Shenita Wilson was sixth in a time of 54.30 and Kim Norsworthy was seventh with a 54.32 time. Sharia Clinkscale was ninth in the high jump with a leap of 5-06, while Aija Kortesoja was ninth in the shot with a throw of 44-06.
Clemson's women's 4X100 meter relay finished second in a time of 44.8, just four-tenths of a second off the Clemson record.
The Clemson men sent just 14 competitors to the meet and had four top 10 finishes. In addition to the relay championship, David Hartzler finished third in the pole vault with a leap of 5.10 meters. Matt Helinski was fourth in the hammer event with a throw of 186-07, the second longest toss by a Tiger this year. Greg Hines was sixth in he 400 meters with a time of 52.00. Olympic Gold medalist Carlton Chambers was 12th in the the 200 meters in a time of 21.66.
Both the men and women will compete in the ACC Championships in Atlanta next weekend.
